Annie Sprinkle (nee Ellen Steinberg) has gone from porn star to sexual-healing guru to performance artist. Thousands of audience members (including me) have seen her cervix, and thousands more have had their photographs taken with Sprinkle’s generous breasts on their heads. Her performances are irreverent, intelligent, sensual, clownish, and sweetly brutal, celebrating the power of sexual discovery and advocating orgasmic release from prudish self-censorship; weaving her X-rated personal odyssey into an impressive body of work, she’s become one of the most successful sexual revolutionaries in the avant-garde world. Last month, when her uninsured Sausalito houseboat burned, calls went out over the Internet and through performance networks for donations, from money to orgasms. The donated sexual energy alone must have been tremendous, fueling Sprinkle’s current tour: in Herstory of Porn she comments on a compendium of her 150-plus sex films, made in the 70s and 80s. This event usually attracts porn fans as well as the usual performance crowd, a crossover that will no doubt add an interesting bite to her thoughts about the clips, which range from grainy eight-millimeters to glossy mainstream rape fantasies and fetish flicks.
