If long-standing friendships can be strained by a painting on the wall, what hope is there for alliances between nations? Yasmina Reza’s 1996 parable, detailing three comrades’ quarrel over a recently purchased work of art, has proved successful the world over. Brad Lyons’s direction for this Bohemian Theatre Ensemble debut production imposes a decidedly American tone on Reza’s French setting and Christopher Hampton’s British-idiom translation. But while the quick, almost farcical pace of Lyons’s interpretation risked spilling into empty histrionics under the pressure of first-weekend jitters, the expertise of Mark Pracht, Jeffrey Baumgartner, and Vincent Kracht was still very much in evidence. Through 4/17: Fri 9:30 PM, Sat 6:30 PM, Sun 3 PM. Bailiwick Repertory, Bailiwick Arts Center, 1229 W. Belmont, 773-883-1090. $20.
