Audible Odyssey may be new, but the seven choreographers participating in its debut program, “Sound + Resound,” aren’t. They’re all alums of top tap organizations Chicago Human Rhythm Project and Chicago Tap Theatre, and their experience consequently ranges widely from straight-up rhythm tap (CHRP) to character-driven dance narratives (CTT). Leveraging the solidarity of the local tap-dance community, the lineup suggests an openness to difference and innovation that bodes well for the fledgling troupe.
Each of the seven has been given ten minutes in which to do . . . whatever. Star Dixon will have an African drummer on hand as accompanist, and fellow tapper Tristan Bruns will have a guitarist. For her duet My Subconscious, Kendra Jorstad asked Chicago jazz vocalist Leslie Beukelman to record Stevie Nicks’s “Gold Dust Woman”; the moody, intentionally homemade result (listen for nearby church bells) is perfect for a dance divided between a measured public persona and a more volatile, harder-hitting psyche. Set to music by Devendra Banhart and Cake, Jenna Deidel’s comically sexy quartet Lover (I Wanna Be Yours) has the dancers seducing the audience and then one another. Works by Martin Bronson, Phil Brooks, and Nico Rubio complete the program.
