In David Steen’s stark 1991 drama, the complicated relationship of two wounded brothers–emotionally disordered Joey and physically disabled Chickie–is further destabilized by the arrival of Joey’s sinister, oddly protective former prison mate. Steen’s carefully constructed atmosphere of agitated dread dissolves before it leads to the expected familial cataclysm. But the characters’ raw intensity makes for some powerful performances in EP Theater’s Chicago premiere. Julian Martinez conveys both sweetness and desperation as Chickie, while Garrett Prejean is riveting as on-edge Joey. –Zac Thompson a Through 4/15: Fri-Sat 8 PM, Sun 3 PM, EP Theater, 1820 S.
