Bailiwick Repertory’s 12th annual showcase of projects by emerging directors features evenings of short plays on double or triple bills. The scripts run the gamut from established classical and contemporary selections to avant-garde rarities and untested original material. Each play will be performed twice over the course of the festival; an open postshow critique by local directors of each production’s first performance will allow the directors to incorporate comments from the discussion into the play’s subsequent performance. The fest runs through September 20 at Bailiwick Repertory, Bailiwick Arts Center, 1229 W. Belmont, 773-883-1090. Performance times are Mondays-Wednesdays at 7:30 PM; tickets are $10 per evening.

Before Breakfast

Eugene O’Neill’s little-known 1916 one-act, derived from August Strindberg’s The Stronger, concerns a wife who nags her seemingly unresponsive husband while he shaves. It’s directed

by Michael Buino.

Girl’s Night Out

Tamara Anderson directs Della Tee’s play with jazz music about women dealing with failed relationships.

Labor Day

Sheri Wilner’s study of young friends whose holiday celebration is interrupted when one of the group stops time is staged by Jaclyn Pryor.

Peanut Butter and Ampersands

Daniel Shea’s “meditation on work, love, and false moustaches” is directed by the author.

27 Wagons Full of Cotton

Allen Jeffrey Rein stages Tennessee Williams’s one-act about a woman on a Mississippi plantation.

A Freak Beyond Compare

This drama, written and directed by Donald Williams Jr., tells of a once-

prosperous community’s decline.


Vanessa T. Stalling stages Israel Horovitz’s one-act about conflict and competition in a queue.
