Bailiwick Repertory’s 12th annual showcase of projects by emerging directors features evenings of short plays on double or triple bills. The scripts run the gamut from established classical and contemporary selections to avant-garde rarities and untested original material. Each play will be performed twice over the course of the festival; an open postshow critique by local directors of each production’s first performance will allow the directors to incorporate comments from the discussion into the play’s subsequent performance. The fest runs through September 20 at Bailiwick Repertory, Bailiwick Arts Center, 1229 W. Belmont, 773-883-1090. Performance times are Mondays-Wednesdays at 7:30 PM; tickets are $10 per evening.

Gina Monreal’s new comedy about a jack-in-the-box’s soul-searching quest is staged by Genevieve Hurst.

Token to the Moon

Festival coordinator Matthew Hahn directs Brian Christopher Williams’s play about two lonely people–a night wanderer and a UN interpreter–seeking to escape to a world without gravity or reasons to hide.


Matthew Lundquist directs a short play by Samuel Beckett, written for imprisoned Czech dissident playwright Vaclav Havel because Havel was himself forbidden to write.



Tom Small directs his own adaptation of Homer’s Iliad; the production employs masks, dance, and music.

The Women at the Tomb

Belgian dramatist Michel de Ghelderode’s 1928 play about the aftermath of Christ’s crucifixion is staged by Gregory Gerhard.


Bitter Suite

Eric Sydnor directs his own nonverbal dance-theater adaptation of The Seagull, Anton Chekhov’s study of an aging actress and her family.

The Yellow Boat

David Saar’s drama, about a boy with AIDS who learns to understand himself through art, is staged by Scott M. Mead and Steve Needham.
