They are the reigning goddesses of the Chicago performance scene: Paula Killen, Marcia Wilkie, Cindy Salach, Rennie Sparks, Jenny Magnus, Liz Phair, 1992 international poetry slam champ Lisa Buscani, and the WAC Drum Corps. They don’t mess around. Not with their art, not with their politics. Last year, at the Big Goddess Pow Wow II, they tamed the rock-and-roll crowd at Cabaret Metro so well, Metro asked them back and sweetened the deal by offering to coproduce the event. And what en event it will be. The Pow Wow will be called to order with a performance by the Women’s Action Coalition Drum Corps followed by one-woman takes on subjects from pop culture to abortion to friendship and back again. Joan Dickinson, a redheaded femme fatale in platforms (once described as “Betty Boop with a brain”) will officiate at this event, which brings together some of the strongest, most compelling voices onstage. Metro, 3730 N. Clark, 549-0203. Saturday, May 1, 9 PM (doors open 8 PM). $10.
