“The force of the feminine is a power principle that needs to be rescued from history because it has been surpressed,” says Silvia Malagrino. Her response: photo montages of natural forms (vegetation, underwater life, lava flows) suggesting “that spiritual realm in which human beings and nature are one.” Ahem. Malagrino is currently a visiting artist at the School of the Art Institute and an assistant professor of photography at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “Earth Calls,” an exhibit of her photo montages–some of them as big as 8 feet by 12 feet–opens Wednesday at Artemisia Gallery, 700 N. Carpenter. The gallery is open 11 to 5 Tuesday through Saturday, and an opening reception will be held from 5 to 8 next Friday, October 5. The show runs through October 26; call 226-7323 for more info.
