This sixth annual monthlong event, sponsored by the Instituto Cervantes, is flooding the city with talent from Spain and elsewhere. At 7:30 PM on Thursday, February 1, dancer David Perez Almagro–the 22-year-old winner of the 2006 Young Flamenco of Andalucia Prize–performs at the Cultural Center with an expert singer, guitarist, and second dancer from El Cante de las Minas, in La Union, Spain. In a preview Almagro demonstrated admirable control and attention to detail, then at the end of the hour broke into some of the most joyful, abandoned dancing I’ve seen. Wednesday, February 7, the New York-based Oscar Valero Flamenco Company appears as part of the Old Town School of Folk Music’s La Pena series, and on Saturday, February 10, Chicago’s Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance Theater performs at the Auditorium in a flamenco and cuadro concert. Saturday, February 24, dancers Ela Weich and Shoshi Israeli are accompanied by electronic cello, cajon, guitar, and song in “Los Cuatro Elementos,” part of the closing event at the Museum of Contemporary Art. a For a complete schedule of performances this week see the listing in Dance.
