Pauline Oliveros is the grand doyenne of American avant-gardism, the quintessential west-coast free spirit who’s always willing to explore unconventional philosophies and techniques. A trailblazer in electronic music and an influential teacher at Mills College and the University of California, San Diego, Oliveros has compiled an impressive body of work that heightens one’s awareness of music as an assemblage of sounds and pauses and of its intimate connection with rituals and meditations. A proponent of mixed-media collaborations as a way of creating modern myths, she now directs a foundation in New York dedicated to that goal, and for the next several months she’ll be teaching at Northwestern. To mark her arrival, Dithyrambic, an excellent percussion-heavy chamber ensemble, will present a sampler of her work. “Accordion Mirages,” to be performed by the composer, is her latest experiment in generating illusive sounds through sustained chords. Some earlier pieces will be played by percussionist Carrie Biolo, vocalist Michele Gillman, and others. Also on the program is Frederick Rzewski’s tantalizing ode “To the Earth,” in which the soloist recites a Homeric hymn while banging on four differently pitched flowerpots.
