Lee Blessing’s cautionary tale about the popularity of “true crime” stories as entertainment has only grown more timely since its premiere in 1989. And the Laboratory Theatre Project wrings plenty of tension from the predicament of a husband-wife reporter team who begin to question the morality of a career based on providing publicity for the kind of monster they’ve been assigned to interview, a serial killer. Kevin Carroll’s sly direction underscores the ethical debate at the play’s center by keeping our attention focused on Kent Brown as the charismatic killer, while Casey McDermott and John Keebler as the ambivalent journalists struggle to resist the murderer’s seductive glamour. –Mary Shen Barnidge a Through 3/17: Fri-Sat 8 PM, Gorilla Tango Theatre, 1919 N.
