Reta Do Fim Do Fim (“The Endless Edge”), performed by three women, is filled with circles: pools of light within the darkness; the arcs described by dancers swinging on ropes; the twists and turns of a body rooted to a single spot, moving around its core. All these circles make me think of the individual’s isolation, circumscribed by the body and by the little space the body can carve out for itself. So perhaps it’s not surprising that the most exhilarating parts of this evening-length work come when bodies intersect–when a dancer running and tumbling across the floor hits a pool of light just as a dancer at the end of a rope swings through it. Or when a dancer on the floor pulls a dancer on a swing into orbit, then surrenders herself to the other’s motion and goes into an orbit all her own. Highly dramatic, Marcia Duarte’s choreography is sensual in an offhand way, as if that weren’t her intent: perhaps in Brazil, where this troupe is from, long masses of hair flowing around the body, open-necked shirts slipping off the shoulder, and silken dresses streaming around legs are everyday stuff. That’s my image of Brazil, anyway. The varied score provides a dramatic context, incorporating folk music and song, what sounds like flamenco singing, jazz, industrial electronic musical, and rock. This weekend EnDanca opens the festival Cruzando Fronteras: Artes de las Americas (“Crossing Borders: Arts of the Americas”), which continues with performances by Antares Danza Contemporanea (Mexico), Danzahoy (Venezuela), and solo artist Pilar Medina (Mexico) through March 31.
