Writer-director Kevin Asher Green makes an impressive debut with this quiet black-and-white character study of a New York ballet student (Paz de la Huerta) being silently devoured by anger, self-doubt, and fear of her own body. Seriously bulimic, she divides her time between a cerebral but randy boyfriend (Evan Neumann) and the unforgiving physical demands of professional ballet, yet erotic and emotional release beckon from the other side of the studio wall, where a well-built West African dance instructor (Isaach De Bankole) teaches a healthier, more exuberant kind of movement. Like a good modern short story, this film creates a rich sense of character using minimalist strokes. To be projected from DigiBeta video; Green will attend the screening. 75 min.
