Playright Nilo Cruz taps into some of the same evocative sensuality and longing woven into his Pulitzer-winning Anna in the Tropics. But this earlier effort, now receiving its midwest premiere under Diane Rodriguez’s direction, is too formally and politely presented given the taboo at its center. Estranged, formerly incestuous brother and sister, Luciana and Luca, who were taken to America from postrevolutionary Cuba, attempt to reunite in Havana during Pope John Paul II’s 1998 visit. Cheryl Lynn Bruce is charming in the title role–a Cuban woman whose miraculous tales move Luciana–but all the poetic interludes don’t add up to a satisfying whole.
