Hubbard Street takes a refreshing detour from the lyrically beautiful into the just plain odd in two new dances. The first program, “Sublime Sentiments,” includes the Chicago premiere of Julian Barnett’s Float, which looks like a romantic duet for nine-year-olds. You sense the duo’s affection, aggression, and competition in an ear placed over the other’s chest, a unison hop while the two hold hands, a hand placed over the other’s mouth. Set to a song by the Icelandic group Mum, Float has an agreeably loose quality and takes a playful approach to the playful music. On the second program, “Innovative Instincts,” former HSDC dancer Lauri Stallings contributes a world premiere, The Manifests. Two men and three women perform five sections inspired by the waltz, representing life’s fundamental rhythm. Moment by moment the choreography is astonishingly different from anything else I’ve seen, and it’s fascinating to watch it unspool. Also on the first program are Marguerite Donlon’s Strokes Through the Tail, Jiri Kylian’s Petite Mort, and Ohad Naharin’s Minus 16.
