Shattered Globe Theatre apparently couldn’t decide whether Peter Parnell’s 1991 play about a closeted gay actor-director and the gossip columnist out to get him was a stylish noir thriller, a clever roman a clef packed with inside jokes, or a naturalistic, even didactic exploration of Hollywood hypocrisy. Sometimes the lines seem well-crafted zingers, other times fragments of realistic dialogue. Even more damaging to the effectiveness of this production is Steve Key’s wooden performance in the lead role–and his tendency, on opening night at least, to stumble over his lines. Brian McCaskill is riveting, however, as the director’s insanely ambitious nemesis, a Walter Winchell-esque columnist who clearly believes he must destroy Hollywood to save it. –Jack Helbig a Through 7/7: Thu-Sat 8 PM, Sun 3 PM, Victory Gardens Greenhouse Theater, 2257 N.
