No-wave avant-funk legend James Chance will forever be associated with the downtown New York art-music scene, so it’s easy to forget he was a Milwaukee boy. Midwestern roots might help explain why he’s found kindred spirits in the Watchers, a deservedly hyped local outfit that plays a nuanced form of dance punk that deals in multicolored pulsations instead of idiotproof beat cushions. Chance and the Watchers first got together for a short tour in late 2003, which featured Chance material of various vintages. (One of those gigs, at the Double Door, was filmed, and Runt Records will release a DVD of the show later this year.) The Watchers just put out a new EP, The Dunes Phase (Gern Blandsten), and they’re hitting the road again with Chance as the New Contortions, playing one show in Milwaukee and one gig here. The New Black, ZZZZ, Panic, and Disc Jockey CB open. Fri 4/8, 9 PM, Double Door, 1572 N. Milwaukee, 773-489-3160 or 312-559-1212, $8 in advance, $10 day of show.
