Back when he went to Senn High School, Lar Lubovitch was plain old Larry. Now not only is he artistic director of a New York-based troupe celebrating its 25th anniversary, but he has choreographed for the likes of New York City Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, the White Oak Dance Project, and ice dancers–the last curiously suited to his creamy, dreamy musicality. But that musicality can take spicier forms too. In Waiting for the Sunrise, Lubovitch uses scratchy old country-and-western recordings to explore romantic longing, and for every chasse that repeats the loping line of the music there’s a quirkier bit; in one song a man’s armless dives into the floor make him look like an inchworm. Concerto Six Twenty-Two, set to Mozart, has as its centerpiece an adagio for two men whose slowly, gracefully twining arms make them look like a two-headed monster. These two works will be performed on the company’s Spring Festival of Dance program along with Four Ragtime Dances, set to music by Charles Ives, and So in Love, set to renderings of Cole Porter tunes by contemporary singers including Annie Lennox and K.D.
