In her trio Carmen, New York choreographer Nancy Turano divides in three the character of opera’s most famous Gypsy, setting her distilled story to selections from Bizet’s score punctuated by laughter, sirens, and the occasional odd mutter. Progressing from external to more internal views, Turano makes her first Carmen so angry and defiant and iconoclastic she borders on crazy. Her second Carmen is the woman who must have captivated Jose in bed, tender and seductive but also strong, guarded, and independent. Turano’s third Carmen is the woman who suffers, who understands that her fate is beyond her control. In an effort to showcase Latina choreographers, Eduardo Vilaro, artistic director of Luna Negra Dance Theater, is adding Turano’s masterful look at a complex personality to his company’s repertoire–and lavishing as much attention on the choreography as if it were his own, telling one of his three superb dancers during a rehearsal that for Carmen “crazy is the center, not crazy fingers.” He’s also created an athletic piece for three men for this engagement, Tag, that examines the way Latinos are taught to walk, play sports, and fight; it’s set to a blend of traditional Brazilian samba music and techno pop.
