It’s hard to believe, but in 1964 Murray Schisgal’s mildly cynical romantic comedy, about neurotic New Yorkers tangled in a sick love triangle, attracted the talents of Alan Arkin, Anne Jackson, Eli Wallach, and director Mike Nichols. The play ran for more than two years on Broadway, and Nichols won a Tony for his efforts, but today one wonders why any self-respecting troupe would choose to revive this glorified sketch. The protagonists–a hysterical male, his womanizing friend, and the castrating female they both love–feel like comedy stereotypes. And the play’s message, that love isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, hardly seems worth repeating. In this Speaking Ring Theatre Company production, Michael Kostel’s cast is capable of mining only the most obvious of Schisgal’s comic moments–and Luv truly stinks. Through 2/2: Mon-Wed 8 PM. Stage Left Theatre, 3408 N. Sheffield, 312-458-9374. $12-$15; industry nights Mon.
