Bassist Malachi Favors Maghostut was one of the early lights to illuminate the revolutionary musical explorations of Chicago’s AACM in the 1960s. That was the era when bassists like Jimmy Garrison were bringing an almost symphonic vision to what had formerly been considered primarily a rhythm instrument; Maghostut has carried this idea into the present day. There’s a delicacy to his playing, a gentle bravery that allows him to challenge the boundaries of western musical convention without seeming nihilistic or brash. He creates lines of almost liquid suppleness, fusing his awesome technique–multifinger pizzicato runs, rapid-fire double stops and audacious octave leaps–with a meditative sense of purposefulness that makes his music seem tranquil and healing even in furious moments of free-form inspiration. He’ll be joined by percussionist Kahil El’Zabar and an AACM reedman to be announced later in the kind of lineup that could fill high-priced auditoriums in many places around the world; we get to see it, along with six other top jazz and blues acts, for a single cover charge.
