Kathleen Tolan’s play, warmly directed by Sandy Shinner, not only perfectly captures the tension and love between a teenage daughter and her mother but gently explores a central question: how should we live? High school student Katia (Cassandra Bissell) is concerned with the big picture: war, poverty, the destruction of one country by another. Her mother, Maggie (an appropriately weary Taylor Miller), focuses on the ups and downs of daily life. While Katia tries to figure out her place in this desperate world, Maggie comes home from work and bakes a blueberry pie. Together, they figure out a balance between seeing the world as it is and living the life in front of them. Through 10/23: Tue-Fri 8 PM, Sat 5 and 8:30 PM, Sun 3 PM. Victory Gardens Theater, first-floor main stage, 2257 N. Lincoln, 773-871-3000. $30-$40.
