Midnight Bible School: An Evening of Sit-Down Comedy

For the past 11 months, Second City alum Matt Dwyer has drawn local comedians and improvisers out of the woodwork with an opportunity to push the boundaries of stand-up comedy. Acting as both ringmaster and performer, the politically conscious Dwyer is the only constant in the rotating group of players–and when it comes to cool irony, he could give Letterman a run for his money. “I don’t know what you’re going to see tonight. It could be all kinds of stuff…or it could be lame bullshit,” he announced at a recent performance of the late-night Midnight Bible School. “But I’ve got your money so I don’t care.” Sure enough, the lessons in comedy offered by the teachers at the Midnight Bible School were a mixed bag. Some performers went the safe route, like Mike Lukas, who closed the show with ten minutes of whip-smart but fairly tame observational humor. Others went straight for the jugular: Alyson Lyon’s schizophrenic routine trumped everything else in an evening that routinely included jokes about abortion, pedophilia, and mass murder. After taking the stage in full Dolly Parton getup, Lyon stripped off her shirt, bared her breasts, and launched into a wonderfully bittersweet story about stalking her first love. That’s something you don’t see every night at your typical comedy club. The Second City, Donny’s Skybox Studio, Piper’s Alley, 1608 N. Wells (fourth floor), 312-337-3992. Open run: Saturdays, 10 PM. $8.
