Hershey Felder, who wrote and performed the one-man hit George Gershwin Alone, mines similar territory in this solo show: he recites Chopin’s biography in the first person while playing some of the composer’s signature pieces. It’s a pleasant evening, cleanly directed by Joel Zwick, though Felder’s acting–which ranges from distant to cloyingly sentimental–gives the experience an encyclopedic quality: instead of offering experiences and insights, Monsieur Chopin provides facts and anecdotes. Until the very end, that is, when Felder breaks character to tell a few revelatory, deeply personal stories about Chopin in the third person and hosts a sing-along, which brings warmth to a cold evening. Open run: Tue-Sat 8 PM, Sun 3 PM. Royal George Theatre Center, 1641 N. Halsted, 312-988-9000. $35-$39.50.
