Verisimilitude proves a blessing and a curse in 20% Theatre Company’s production of Marsha Norman’s 1982 drama about a middle-aged woman who’s decided to kill herself despite her mother’s anguished protests. Kay Schmitt as the mother and Abigail Boucher (a bit young for the part) as her daughter opt for what could be called a cinematic style of naturalistic acting, well suited to a camera lens or cramped performance space–all subtle facial expressions and understated line readings. But this approach blunts the impact of the tragedy: though Sarah Ostman’s staging is believable, it lacks a sense of urgency and awful inexorability.
