Back in 1982, when Ozric Tentacles were making their name on the English festival circuit, they seemed like a throwback–the last gasp, perhaps, of the grand, gently weird British space-rock tradition. But traditions like that have very, very long institutional attention spans, and so with 24 years of personnel changes behind him, guitarist-keyboardist Ed Wynne is still steering his unwieldy ship on its never-ending voyage, powered by the steadfast love of European hippies. Over time the Ozrics have subjected their highly technical but playful cosmic jams–think Gong and Caravan–to ongoing updates, weaving in acid-jazz and techno elements, but their sound always instantly regrows its vine-covered trelliswork of hallucinatory nostalgia. This tour celebrates the imminent release of The Floor’s Too Far Away, the band’s 22nd album (counting reissues of early fan-distributed cassettes), but on message boards the faithful are still mourning the departure of charismatic flutist John Egan (aka Champignon), a fixture since 1988 who reportedly got kicked out last summer. Dub Trio opens. Fri 6/30, 9 PM, Park West, 322 W. Armitage, 773-929-5959 or 312-559-1212, $18 in advance, $20 at the door, 18+.
