Peter Jefferies spells out his recording philosophy in the booklet accompanying his new album Electricity, released on Chicago’s Ajax records: “No outboard effects. No compression. No noise reduction.” It might sound limiting, but as a recording artist and producer/engineer working with such like-minded New Zealand artists as the Dead C., King Loser, and Sandra Bell, he has consistently demonstrated that having modest means doesn’t mean you have to make a modest recording. He combines a perfectionist’s drive to capture the ultimate performance with a gift for getting evocative and nonstandard sounds from the most basic equipment. He’s made his mark as a recording artist, but Jefferies is also a commanding live solo performer. He plays piano with a percussive drive that betrays his origins as a drummer, and his aristocratic baritone voice lends emotional weight to the isolated outsider persona he articulates in his songs. Jefferies performs on the same bill as Vancouver’s Mecca Normal (see Critic’s Choice) and Trash, a New Zealand-based trio with a gift for sculpting catchy songs out of repetitive feedback blasts.
