Choreographer Ashley Roland has a knack for the striking solo. Formerly a member of Momix and a cofounder of ISO Dance and BodyVox, she has the ability to take an image and run with it, as she demonstrated in Captain Tenacity–a solo involving a superhero and Velcro that’s become a favorite among River North viewers. Now the company adds Roland’s Beat to its repertoire. Set to Evan Solot’s percussive music, it features a woman in a metallic costume whose abrupt, rapid movements seem both animalistic and mechanical. Following the rapid-fire score beat for beat, she sends her head and hair flying in motions that resemble break dancing but don’t have that form’s humanity: she’s a sort of Tin Man with no squeaking joints whatsoever. Also premiering on this Dance Chicago 2001 program are A Mi Manera, a rather disjointed collaboration between former artistic director Sherry Zunker, Ginger Farley, and Kevin Iega Jeff set to the Gipsy Kings’ rendition in Spanish of Paul Anka’s “My Way,” and artistic director Frank Chaves’s Love Will Follow, a straightforwardly romantic, pointedly elegant piece for six couples. Also on the program are Captain Tenacity, Daniel Ezralow’s Pulse, Randy Duncan’s Turning Tides, Zunker’s Vent, and Chaves’s At Last, Charanga, and The Two Sides of Tes–And Then Some.
