The Royal Crescent Mob are three sleazy white guys and a black drummer from Columbus, Ohio; instead of playing funked-up heavy metal, they play garagey, metal-tinged funk. They’re so good at it that when they slip from a James Brown cover into a Led Zeppelin tune it comes off with an ease and logic that’s damn near inspirational–though why they should succeed where other white funk bands fail (e.g., Red Hot Chili Peppers) I don’t know; it’s a subtle mystery that’s worth probing every time their never-tiring tour bus makes a run through town. Tonight, 11:30 PM, Cabaret Metro, 3730 N. Clark; 549-0203.
