Integrating computer-generated imagery with live action has become a huge visual challenge: despite CGI’s jaw-dropping power, its uneasy relationship with the human form has spoiled more movies than it’s enhanced. This debut feature by Kerry Conran is a triumph not only for its technical mastery but for its good taste. The actors performed entirely in front of blue screens, and a team of nearly 100 3-D animators filled in the rest, creating a luminescent world of mildly desaturated color that draws heavily on the cover illustrations of 30s sci-fi magazines. Perhaps inevitably, the story is a commercially safe Indiana Jones retread, with debonair flying ace Jude Law and smart-mouthed reporter Gwyneth Paltrow saving the earth from giant robots. But Conran fully exploits the young stars’ iconic good looks, welcoming them into his visionary world.
