As advertised, this show was improvised–but it wasn’t funny. In fact the Penguin Theater Company, directed by Chris Biddle, came up with some pretty melancholy character sketches and scenes, accompanied by Ben Kramer’s deft–but melancholy–guitar playing. Because there was little conflict between the characters, there was also little humor: mostly the eight earnest cast members ruminated about the purpose of life and work, jumping off from audience members’ anecdotes about themselves. These poignant, wry stories were the best part of the evening, with the feel of This American Life. If the cast could create a similar tone, this might be a good show. Through 10/31: Mon 8 PM. Playground Theater, 3209 N. Halsted, 773-334-8889. $10.
