The People, yes, Theo Ubique Theatre. Fred Anzevino has adapted Carl Sandburg’s poetry cycle The People, Yes for a five-member ensemble–a method of presentation so well suited to the work’s earthy wisdom, homespun wit, and populist plaudits that it’s surprising no one had tried it before. Any performance that relies heavily on verbal rather than visual action runs the risk of reducing the cast to talking heads, but Anzevino keeps his players moving. They pace the perimeter of their in-the-round space and arrange themselves in constantly shifting patterns, addressing the audience directly, revitalizing language now most often encountered on the page. Enhancing their harmonies is the live incidental music of Rich Green, which recalls Sandburg’s practice of accompanying himself at his readings.
