Quest Theatre Ensemble’s shoestring puppet adaptation of the musical has its good points, among them an impressive wizard with snaky arms and gigantic hands and a tea party for the Wicked Witch of the West and her friends complete with uppity butler. The show works when it attains a state of high glee, eliciting that giddy “We’re off to see the wizard!” feeling. But the serious scenes drag it down: lyrical dance sequences add nothing, and do we really need yet another soulful rendition of “Over the Rainbow”? Or the Winkies marching to an extralong version of “O-Ee-Yah! Eoh-Ah!”? Two and a half hours is too long to spend in a stifling church basement watching empty or tired material. Through 9/25: Fri-Sat 7:30 PM, Sun 2 PM. Saint Gregory the Great, Klasen Athletic Building, 1609 W. Gregory, 312-458-0895. Free
