Chicago fringe favorite Theater Oobleck has invaded the Hideout and for the month of “Joon” will take over the venue’s Tuesday Night Residency, presenting music and performances by Oobleckers and associates each week.
The opening show, “One Up” (6/3), features short solo works “musical, spoken, and miscellaneous” from Oobleck founding members Danny Thompson and Mickle Maher, playwright-performer Barrie Cole, and Soup & Bread originator (and former Reader staffer) Martha Bayne, among others. Ronnie Kuller of Mucca Pazza and Naomi Walker DJ before and after the show.
In “Row, Voyager” (6/10), Ooblecker Chris Schoen presents a new arrangement of his song cycle based on Baudelaire’s The Voyage featuring Emmy Bean and other musical guests. 80 Foots Per Minute, Schoen and Bean’s “lit-folk” trio with T-Roy Martin, opens.
Fictional American folksinger Jewboy Cain, played by nonfictional Jeff Dorchen, went off the fictional grid ten years ago after starring in Oobleck’s The Life and Times of Jewboy Cain: Jewboy Rejux. In “Jewboy and Grosbeck” (6/17) fictional talk-show host Marty Grosbeck, played by nonfictional David Isaacson, gets the scoop on what Jewboy’s been up to since. John Corbett of Corbett vs. Dempsey DJs.
For “This Land That I Love” (6/24), Theater Oobleck welcomes back founding member John Shaw with music and readings from his new book of the same title, a social history cum study of Irving Berlin, Woody Guthrie, and the American anthem. Readers include Shaw and Oobleckers Terri Kapsalis and David Isaacson; John Corbett once again DJs “fore and aft.”
Admission is a $5 suggested donation or as always with Oobleck, “More if you’ve got it. Free if you’re broke.”
