Contrary to popular belief, not every important film is available on disc in this country. Frank Borzage’s Moonrise, Mikio Naruse’s Late Chrysanthemums, Otto Preminger’s The Human Factor, Eliseo Subiela’s Man Facing Southeast, and Eric Rohmer’s Rendezvous in Paris have never been issued on Region 1 DVD. But you still can find them on videocassette at Sulzer Regional Library in Lincoln Square. The library’s VHS collection may be only a vestige of its former self—a few thousand titles today, compared to 20,000 in 2005—but it still contains plenty of gems. Better yet, the library continues to shelve cassettes alongside DVDs, so whenever you browse the movie section, you’re likely to stumble upon some out-of-print masterpiece.
