The Janes

In December 2005 some staffers at the Old Town School formed a go-go troupe, the Mary Janes, to perform at a holiday party. Since then it’s morphed into the Janes, a group of about a dozen fans of the genre. Leader Krista Ortgiesen points out they’ve taken their white go-go boots to street fairs, improv gigs, and clubs like the Empty Bottle and Martyrs’; they’ll make appearances on the Old Town School’s float in the Pride Parade on June 26 and as part of the OTS’s tribute to David Bowie on July 23. Ortgiesen also teaches go-go dancing at the Flamenco Arts Center (3755 N. Western) on Mondays and Tuesdays from 7:30-8:30 PM; drop-in lessons are $12. In class, she often uses the Beatles or the Kinks so her students will be familiar with the songs, and some of her personal favorites are the Grass Roots’ “Midnight Confessions,” the Who’s “I Can’t Explain,” and the Strawberry Alarm Clock’s “Incense and Peppermints.” In addition to the mandatory boots, the ensemble’s costumes include fringed minis, silver minis, and custom-made Union Jack minis. —Kate Schmidt
