The 24-hour ice-dispensing machines on the south wall of this West Lawn ice plant are perfect for those early AM occasions when you need a trunkful of 40-pound ice blocks to cool down a stiff before the sun rises. There’s a bill changer too (though it won’t accept Benjamins), and the coin-operated machines also spit out 22-pound blocks and seven- and 22-pound bags of regular cubes. But the main reason the more centrally located Polar Ice Company doesn’t win here is that its machines do not dispense Lang’s Chicago Classic Cube, a sharply symmetrical, slow-melting clear block. Ideal for fine cocktails, they’re the best commercially available ice cubes outside of buying your own Kold Draft machine.
