Emerson just capped her sophomore year with a sterling performance for the Cougars in the Great West Outdoor Championships in Humble, Texas: she finished fourth in the shot put, fifth in the discus throw, ninth in the hammer throw, and tenth in the javelin throw. She’s already set the Chicago State record in all four events. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native took up throwing events in seventh grade to stay in shape for basketball. She found she had an aptitude for them, and soon quit basketball. At five foot six and 175 pounds, she’s smaller than most of her throwing competitors; she excels because of her technique, she says. She enjoys “being able to throw like a big person even though I’m small.” She hopes to compete in the Olympics four years from now.
