Earlier this year the folks at Longman & Eagle unveiled a pair of single-barrel, barrel-proof, 21-year-old “mystery” bourbons they’d purchased at Willet Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, which releases some of the most coveted American whiskeys on the market. Thought to be salvaged from an old Heaven Hill rickhouse that burned down, they’re priced at a prohibitive $40 dollars per two-ounce pour. The 109-proof ‘Longman’ bottling is perhaps too hot to enjoy at that price, but the 100.5-proof ‘Eagle’ is a subtly sweet-finishing swirl of butterscotch, vanilla, and caramel that’s well worth the dollars. Just once.
