After a rough landing at Midway, what better tonic for your stomach than—sausage! Bobak’s retail store, less than a five-minute drive northeast of the airport, has a broad variety of Polish sausage as well as Lithuanian and Italian. The chipotle sausage may be a small nod to the changing of the neighborhood to Latino, but the store still specializes in eastern European goods, with jars of sauerkraut, red cabbage, and pickled beets imported from Poland and a hot food bar with chicken Kiev, barley and blood sausage, and breaded pork chops. Frank Bobak, a Polish immigrant and butcher, founded the company in 1967 with a retail deli on the north side, and at one point he had four delis in the city and a sausage factory near the stockyards. Since the late 80s Bobak’s has been mainly a wholesaler, with its manufacturing plant adjacent to the deli on Archer. The store has a full meat counter, a bakery, and produce, but the sausage is the main draw. —Steve Bogira
