A. Laurie Palmer’s sculpture, Hole, is seven feet tall and shaped like a funnel cloud, its wide mouth tapering to an almost dainty circular base. A professor at the School of the Art Institute, Palmer often uses common materials in her art—past installations have featured salt and cooked cabbage. Hole is built from old lumber, and there’s something very ominous about it. Seen from below, it’s grim and imposing. The sense of darkness only increases when, upon being hoisted up to its rim by a pulley system, you look into it from above. From that vantage point Hole no longer resembles a tornado but rather a deep well carved into the earth.
