Chicago Public Radio and the Public Square co-host the second annual Winter Block Party for Chicago’s Hip-Hop Arts on Sun 1/17 from 11 AM to 10 PM at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theater (2433 N. Lincoln). The party kicks off at 11 AM with a screening of P-Star Rising, director Gabriel Noble’s documentary about 15-year-old rapper Priscilla Diaz’s rise to fame, followed by a Q&A session with Diaz and performance by local hip-hop group Kuumba Lynx. At 2 PM, Chicago Public Radio resident poet and hip-hop correspondent Kevin Covall hosts “WORD: Across Generations,” featuring performances by poets Carolyn Rogers, John Murillo, Aja Monet, a discussion of their work, and an open mic showcase. At 4 PM, Hexstar of Chicago break-dance group the Brickheadz hosts a B-Boy/B-Girl battle. Other free events include a graffiti art exhibition, haircuts, music, food, and more. The night program, which costs $15 ($10 with student ID), is the discussion “The New Style: Hip-Hop Aesthetics Across Genres,” which begins at 7:30 PM and includes a complimentary reception with beer provided by Goose Island Brewery.
