Rapper, producer, and Mississippi native Big K.R.I.T. has a reputation as a serious artist, working in the David Banner tradition of uniting the South’s legacy of social activism with its history of nasty-ass rap beats. “All Gold Everything” rapper Trinidad James is held in considerably lower esteem by listeners who prefer their rap music conscious. In fact, he gets accused of peddling a modern style of minstrelsy fairly frequently.
So when K.R.I.T.’s new mixtape, King Remembered in Time, dropped the other day it was surprising to see James’s name in the credits. But their collaborative track, “My Trunk,” is less strange than the team-up looks on paper. K.R.I.T. provides a bedrock of swampy synth bass, a gnarly fuzzed-out guitar lead (2013 is turning into a good year for guitar shredding on rap songs), and a couple of verses where he lets his hedonistic gangster side off the leash. Then Trinidad James shows up and threatens, in his inimitably charming way, to show his ass. Hit the jump to stream the song and hit up DatPiff to download the whole mixtape.
