Yesterday would have been Kurt Cobain’s 47th birthday. Does that make you feel old? It would feel odd to not honor him just a little bit, so today’s 12 O’Clock Track is “Dive,” one of my favorite Nirvana jams. Nirvana was far from the best band to come out of the late-80s northwest punk explosion, but they were obviously the most important. This isn’t saying that Cobain wasn’t some sort of songwriting genius either, because he absolutely was. Originally released as the B side to the “Sliver” single, “Dive” perfectly showcases his ability to blend oddball Pixies guitar leads, the darkness of the Wipers, and the pop sensibility of the Beatles—it’s a song that after two decades still hasn’t gotten old. Rest in peace, Kurt.
