• Dr. Dre’s debut, The Chronic

Coachella’s first weekend wrapped up five days ago, and even now pretty much all I’ve heard about that gigantic festival is that Hologram Tupac showed up. (Yes, I know it wasn’t really a hologram.) He’s become quite the phenomenon this week, and reactions range from awe to discomfort to shock. For folks who followed the preliminary Coachella coverage last week, however, a holographic cameo shouldn’t have been a big surprise. Multiple sources saw one coming, but they were expecting it to be of deceased Dogg Pound singer Nate Dogg, not Tupac.

Nate did get a tribute during Dre’s epic Coachella set, but it was a series of photos projected behind the crew while they did “Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None)” from Doggystyle. A fitting tribute and a hot jam, no doubt, but it was lost in the mania for Hologram Tupac. In honor of the fallen but never forgotten Nate Dogg, today’s 12 O’Clock Track is his first official recorded appearance: “Deeez Nuuutz,” from Dr. Dre’s 1992 classic, The Chronic.
