The last time we heard from El-P he was messing around with new technology that let him legally (or at least apparently legally) throw Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” underneath a remix of his own “Drones Over BKLYN.” Now he’s produced an album for perennially underrated Atlanta rapper Killer Mike, due May 15 on Williams Street Records, which is basically an outlet that lets the people behind Adult Swim’s original programming hype music they like. Today the label released a sneak preview of the early front runner for Best-Titled Rap Record of the Year, R.A.P. Music, in the form of “Big Beast,” which matches Mike up with the ever-trill Bun B, the not-currently-incarcerated T.I., and beyond-gully mix-tape sensation Trouble. True to its name, it’s a beast of a song: El-P’s beat evokes war zones and strip clubs in equal measure, and every rapper tries to out-heavy the others and all of them somehow succeed.
