Rapper Kitty (formerly Kitty Pryde) shot to internet superstardom last year with her “Okay Cupid” single, a woozy bedroom jam from the least likely rap star out there: an awkward white girl from Florida. But it didn’t take long to realize that Kitty’s the real deal: in the spring she toured as direct support for Danny Brown, one of hip-hop’s hottest tickets right now (I saw their show at Bottom Lounge and my heart skipped a beat when Kitty took the stage wearing a Danzig T-shirt as a dress). This paired with the incredible amount of growth between her goofy Haha, I’m Sorry EP and the druggy and clever D.A.I.S.Y. Rage has proven that Kitty is way more than an internet gimmick, but a supersmart and incredibly unique voice in the young hip-hop world. Last week, the “rap game Taylor Swift,” as she calls herself, leaked “Second Life,” a song from her upcoming Flowerviolence record, and it’s today’s 12 O’Clock Track. “Second Life” sees even more boundary pushing and evolution from the former Claire’s employee, her flow and wordplay stronger than ever, and the production moving away from typical hip-hop and more into ambient trance. It’s really pretty and catchy, and if you were wondering, it sounds real fucking good when it’s chopped and screwed.
