Tonight marks the official opening of Thalia Hall, the joint Pilsen venture between Bruce Finkelman of the Empty Bottle and Craig Golden of Evanston’s SPACE. I’ve seen the theater in various states of decrepitude at various times over the last few years, but on my last visit a few months ago its innate beauty had emerged. And I’ve heard good things about the space’s test run last week, a private show by Disappears. Christening the stage this evening is Panda Bear (aka Animal Collective’s Noah Lennox)—Baltimore’s DJ Dog Dick opens—who promises to play music from a forthcoming new album. A couple of months ago Spin magazine posted what it termed “likely a live version of a new P-Bear track,” culled from a mixtape assembled by Panda Bear collaborator Sonic Boom. I hope Spin‘s wrong, because it sounds like little more than someone doing karaoke over a Ladysmith Black Mambazo cut. There are some awful-sounding amateur videos of some earlier concerts from the current tour floating around on the Internet, but until the actual album surfaces I’d rather revisit something from the last Panda Bear record, Tomboy (Paw Tracks). In that spirit, today’s 12 O’Clock Track is “Alsatian Darn.”
