For all the cutting-edge streetwear they stock and all the music-celebrity interactions they so casually brush off, the dudes at Turntable Lab are still insane record geeks at heart. Ever since I switched over to a laptop-based DJ setup I don’t do much record shopping through them, but I still read up on their recommendations and I still keep their store blog in my RSS feed. On that blog right now they’re running a series of interviews where friends of the Lab reminisce about their first Technics 1200 setup. DJs are by nature a cocky bunch, so it’s a nice and sorta surprising treat when they drop all the tude and turn back into dorky 17 year olds. And because 1200s are extremely expensive to any sort of beginning-stages DJ and affordable ones always come to you through interstingly shady means, the stories are pretty good.
