This year marks two landmark anniversaries in the history of off-Loop theater–the anniversary of Second City, founded in December 1959, and of the Body Politic Theatre, founded in 1969. Significantly, both theaters owe their existence to director Paul Sills, who died last year at the age of 80.

1959 Second City, cofounded by Paul Sills, Howard Alk;

1969 Body Politic, cofounded by Sills, William Russo, and Rev. Jim Shiflett; Sills came up with the name Body Politic;

sad that Sills didn’t live to see these 2 landmark anniversaries in an off-Loop theater scene that he helped create: he died June 2, 2008, at age 80.
